Comparision of Measurement of Human Sperm Motility by Sperm Quality Analyzer and Makler Counting Chamber

Abstract
In semen analysis , the most important factor in judging male fertility is sperm motility. Therefore, it is necessary to have a practical method of sperm motility measurement in an objective, economical and simple way. We have measured sperm
motility by
using the recently developed Sperm Quality Analyzer(SQA) (United Medical System Inc., Santa Ana, CA), a unique electroptical device designed for an objective, quick(40 seconds)and safe quantitative evaluation of sperm motility, and compared the
results-the sperm motility index(SMI)-with the sperm motility measured by the makler counting chamber(SefiMedical Instrument, Haifa, Israel). The sample was obtained by masturbation of a young healthy man after 72 hours of abstinence and allowed
to
liquefy in an incubator at 37 C before examination. A significant correlation of the SMI and sperm motility(%) from the Makler counting chamber was found(r=0.873, p<0.01). A significant correlation also was found between the SMI and the MacLeod
motility
index(r=0.733, P<0.01). The SQA appears to be a valuable tool.
